Before You Remove Your Curtains: A Practical Cleaning Checklist

Neutral sheer curtains hanging beside a softly lit window.

Curtains are exposed to dust, airborne particles, moisture, sunlight and everyday household activity. Over time, this can affect their appearance and freshness—even when the change is difficult to notice while they are hanging.

Preparing your curtains carefully before bringing them in for cleaning helps protect the fabric and makes reinstalling them much easier afterwards.

Premium Care cleans curtains brought into our Wantirna South store. Customers are responsible for removing and reinstalling their curtains, so we recommend following this checklist before taking anything down.

Photograph the curtains before removal

Take several clear photographs while the curtains are still hanging.

Include:

  • The entire window and curtain arrangement.

  • The position of each individual panel.

  • Pleats, folds and headings.

  • How adjoining panels overlap.

  • Any cords, tracks or other installation details you may need to remember.

These photographs provide a useful reference when you reinstall the curtains.

This is particularly helpful when several windows have similar-looking panels or when the arrangement includes multiple layers.

Label every curtain panel

Before removing the curtains, give each panel a simple label identifying its location.

For example:

  • Lounge room—left.

  • Lounge room—right.

  • Main bedroom—window one.

  • Dining room—centre panel.

Attach the label somewhere secure that will not damage the fabric. Avoid pins, staples, adhesive tape or anything else that could leave a mark.

If you are unsure how to label a delicate curtain safely, place each panel in a separately labelled bag or wrapping instead.

Remove all hooks and fittings

Remove every detachable hook, ring, weight, pin and fitting before bringing the curtains to Premium Care.

Keep these items at home. We do not need hooks and fittings to be supplied with the curtains.

Store the fittings from each window in a separate, clearly labelled container or bag. This prevents them from becoming mixed up and makes reinstallation considerably easier.

Check folds, headings and pockets carefully, as small hooks can be easy to overlook.

Check the care label

Look for a manufacturer’s care label before removing the curtains. It may be sewn into a hem, side seam or heading.

Do not remove the label. It can provide useful information about the fabric composition and the manufacturer’s recommended care method.

However, a care label is only part of the assessment. Curtain fabrics, linings, coatings, trims and previous exposure to sunlight can all affect how an item responds to cleaning.

Each curtain should therefore be assessed individually.

Inspect the fabric and lining

Examine both sides of each curtain in good natural light.

Look for:

  • Areas of fading or sun damage.

  • Weakened or brittle fabric.

  • Loose stitching.

  • Small tears or holes.

  • Damaged linings.

  • Water marks.

  • Mildew or signs of prolonged moisture.

  • Stains or discolouration.

  • Decorative trims that are loose or damaged.

Sunlight can weaken curtain fabric over time, particularly along window-facing folds and edges. Fabric that appears sound while hanging can sometimes be fragile when handled.

Make a note of anything you find and point it out when bringing the curtains in.

Identify stains and previous treatments

If you know what caused a stain, tell us. Information about whether it came from water, food, drinks, pets, insects, smoke or another source can assist with the assessment.

Also tell us if you have already tried to remove it and what product or method you used.

Avoid experimenting with additional household stain removers before professional assessment. Some products can set a stain, affect colour or leave residues that make subsequent treatment more difficult.

Complete stain removal cannot be guaranteed, particularly where the fabric has been affected by age, sunlight, previous treatment or an unknown substance.

Handle the curtains carefully

Support the curtain’s weight as you remove it. Avoid pulling against the heading, lining or stitching.

For large or heavy curtains, having another person assist may reduce the risk of stretching the fabric or damaging the installation.

Do not drag curtains across the floor or place them on dusty, damp or outdoor surfaces.

Once removed, fold each panel loosely. Avoid making sharp creases or compressing decorative headings.

Prepare the curtains for transport

Place the curtains in clean bags, clean wrapping or another suitable protective covering.

Keep them dry and avoid leaving them in a hot vehicle for an extended period. If the curtains are damp, contact Premium Care before sealing them inside plastic, as trapped moisture can create further problems.

Keep panels from different rooms or windows separated where practical. Make sure your labels remain visible and secure.

Bring useful information with you

When bringing the curtains to Premium Care, let us know:

  • Which curtains belong together.

  • The approximate age of the curtains, if known.

  • Any stains or areas of concern.

  • Any previous cleaning or stain-removal treatments.

  • Whether you have noticed fading, shrinkage or fabric deterioration.

  • Any relevant manufacturer or supplier information.

You do not need to bring hooks, rings or other fittings.

Begin with an individual assessment

Curtains vary widely in construction, fibres, dyes, linings and finishes. Their age and exposure to sunlight can also influence the available cleaning options.

For that reason, the process begins with an individual assessment rather than a general promise about the result.

Premium Care’s qualified owners have completed dry-cleaning apprenticeships, have more than 20 years of industry experience and undertake continuing industry training through the DIA and DLI.

If your curtains need attention, remove and label them carefully, keep all hooks and fittings at home, and bring the curtain panels to Premium Care in Wantirna South for assessment.
